About the event

Program Overview

A school of 71 students from Japan will come to Hawaii for a 3-day program, in collaboration with 6 local high school students at 13 Islanders (local college student). Each group size will consist of around 6~9 participants. In each group, there will be different breakout activities and fieldwork based on the Japan school's topic areas. 

Local Students

LbE Hawaii is seeking (6) local high school students (age 14~18) to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime program. The program is completely free and covered by LbE Hawaii. These student participants will be paired up with 1 of 6 different topic groups, lead by a responsible local college student Islanders. 

 Theme

 Mission: To inspire our future generations in discovering their kuleana in restoring the circular balance of humanity and the natural world through learning the complex interconnections of island sustainability. Learn more about the Kuleana Program here: https://www.kuleanashep.com/

 Program Goal: Each group will conduct research by going on various field trips, collecting data, and eventually creating a video portfolio of the findings. Each group will then need to present the video portfolio to all. The main goal is to discover what each person's kuleana (responsibility) in taking action towards solving sustainable issues.

  • Food Waste - How We Deal with Uneaten Food
  • Homelessness and Art Therapy to Support it
  • Children & Poverty & School Lunch for Those Who Cannot Afford it
  • Ocean/Land Pollution & Voting Trash Can Experiment
  • Ocean/Land Pollution & Interviewing People About it
  • Sustainable/Responsible/Over Tourism 

Schedule

November 11, 2019 (Holiday) - 5:00 PM ~ 7:00 PM

  • Mandatory Orientation for all Islanders + Local High School Students
  • Location: Waikiki (address TBA)
  • Please bring own dinner or snacks if you'll get hungry

November 12, 2019 - 8:00 AM ~ 5:00 PM

  • Parents to drop off @University of Hawaii 
  • Program Orientation Day - get to know each other and understand the goals of the program; prepare for fieldwork
  • Lunch included
  • Parents to pick up from UH at 5:00 PM

November 13, 2019 - 8:00 AM ~ 5:00 PM

  • Parents to drop off @Hotel
  • Full Day Fieldwork  - break out into 6 different groups to go on differend field trips
  • Lunch included
  • Transportation from Waikiki - Fieldwork(s) - Waikiki included
  • Parents to pick up from Waikiki at 5:00 PM

November 14, 2019 - 8:00 AM ~ 4:30 PM

  • Parents to drop off @Hotel
  • Half Day Fieldwork - break out into 6 different groups to go on differend field trips
  • Video production, editing, presentation preparation and rehearsals
  • Final Presentation at hotel in Waikiki
  • Lunch included
  • Transportation from Waikiki - Fieldwork(s) - Waikiki included
  • Parents to pick up from UH at 4:30 PM 

*If students are not able to miss 3 consecutive days of school, we ask that they at least commit to coming to the 11/11 orientation, full day on 11/13, and PM half day on 11/14. Please still register and make a note in registration area*
