How COVID-19 Affected Water in Brazil

Updated: Apr 8, 2021

In this video we could see three different SDGs pop up: SDG 1 Zero Poverty, SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 6 Clean Water & Sanitation.

Looking at SDG 1, there is a reason why it is the first goal amongst all 17 and it also takes a special position in relation to the other SDGs. As financial means present not only countries but also people with the freedom of choice through bringing options into existence, poverty is one of the biggest barriers we have in order to create a better world. In this, financial means do not necessarily have to be the barrier to overcome, but access to options is what is to be focused on.

This brings us to the second SDG mentioned in the video, SDG 10. Not having any options is a fundamental problem for most people on the planet, in many cases due to the lack of adequate access on a universal level. As could be seen in the video, many people are simply not given access to appropriate medical support, disinfecting equipment, and knowledge about the characteristics of COVID19. Creating access for those who need it most because it is difficult for their governments to provide is something that we can only master together. Through sending money to non-profit organizations everyone can help to ensure equal access to necessities; especially in the case of one crucial resource: Clean Water.

As the last SDG shown in the video you could see SDG 6, Clean Water and Sanitation. Having been called “The Elixir of Life” throughout history, clean water is probably the most important resource people need to survive. The COVID19 pandemic has brought another important use for it to the surface presenting the ability for people to clean themselves and protect them from getting easily infected. As we could see, even different communities started organizing access to sinks, soap, and water in order to help each other. With droughts getting worse every year due to global warming and existing clean water being harder and harder to come by due to the pollution of rivers and the acidification of rain, it is of absolute importance to make water a priority in all of our minds.

Even those who are privileged to have regular access to water shall be conscious about water conservation and consumption. It's surprising how much water we waste. Here's our top 5 biggest water wasters.
