I Lost My Job During COVID-19

Updated: Apr 8, 2021

When it comes to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy was one of the first things that took a huge hit. Especially in service-based economies the impact was huge as the industries rely on personal contact. For many people the job market was already an issue that was nearly unsurmountable, but the issue got much larger in the past months.

People are losing their jobs and, with that, their means of income that supports their family, putting a lot of burden onto the social systems in place. While the pandemic will find a decrease at some point, the underlying issues that provided a fertile ground for the harsh impacts the virus had, need to be addressed too. Especially considering the effects an economic downfall such as this has on the minds of individuals.

This connects us to another SDG - although not shown in the video, SDG 3. One huge aspect of Well-being is one’s mental health as we utterly depend on it for productivity, happiness, and a positive outlook on life that drives us. The fact that so many people have lost their livelihood puts a lot of strain on their mental faculties that can in itself have dire consequences for all other aspects in life.

As mentioned in the video, we need to be supportive of each other if we want to get through the pandemic and create a better and more resilient world in the future.

Check out how easy it can be to help others and manage your mental health in our Global Community Resources in the Social Development category.
